Student Testimonials

“As a landscape photography newbie, I was both excited and nervous about participating in TJ and Alex's Wonders of Death Valley workshop. I now know that the nerves were for no reason, and the excitement was 100% justified!

What I appreciated most about TJ and Alex: they made everyone feel comfortable and welcome from the get-go. They emphasized that the experience was an exploration of the heart and art of photography, with the technical stuff being important but not primary. In the field, they took care to regularly check in with every participant to see how they could support us; they were clearly there for us, not for themselves. They were generous with their guidance and encouragement, and they didn't hesitate to offer a hand (or a tripod!) if needed. Their sense of humor made every outing that much more enjoyable and kept our energy high. Their intimate knowledge of the park meant we were in the right places at the right times, accounting for weather, light, and possible crowds.

On a personal note, I was having some mobility issues at times that made it challenging to keep up with some of the more physical parts of the itinerary; I was never made to feel that I was dragging the group down or incapable of participating. When I shared my concerns, TJ and Alex had ideas of alternate ways I could take advantage of a location. I don't think I had to use them, but I believe knowing I had a Plan B in my pocket helped me to power through.

In short, it was an extremely meaningful creative adventure through which I expanded my skill and vision. I'll be processing both my images and the awareness that came out of the experience for quite some time! I'm grateful for the role TJ and Alex played in that. They are both amazing photographers and amazing human beings. I'd happily take another workshop with either or both of them and highly recommend their offerings to anyone who wants to grow as an artist and person.”

“One of the best workshops I've been to where I finally learned a lot! (Apart from tools, camera techniques and the hero shot.)

TJ and Alex shared a lot of insights both in the field and during our casual conversations. It helped me open up to subjects and opportunities beyond the grand landscapes.

Their approach and philosophy are truly inspiring. My time with them has helped me to look beyond the obvious and very greatful for it.

I only wish I got to spend more time with them at Death Valley. Very humble, knowledgeable and an entertaining duo. Not to mention how invested they were in each participant's goals.

For anyone considering their workshop, I highly encourage you to speak your goals and you shall be rewarded!”

Rama R. - Seattle, Washington

“I spent 5 wonderful days with TJ Thorne and Alex Noriega in February 2023 on a workshop in Death Valley. This was all that I had hoped it would be! TJ and Alex both know Death Valley extremely well, which given the size and diversity of the national park was really helpful. The overall photographic experience was first rate ... TJ and Alex talked a lot about how they approach their photography, which was inspiring and liberating. They were always available to provide advice (technical, artistic, compositional), but did not "hover" ... giving us the space to explore our own vision and creativity. They pursue their craft with such passion and enthusiasm -- it's infectious! And the discussions of post-processing were also very valuable. As I expected, Alex and TJ attracted a talented and fun group of workshop participants ... great to hang out with and learn from. Overall, a terrific workshop, and I'd certainly spend more time with each of these talented nature photographers. Thanks!”

“I recently finished spending five splendid days in Death Valley NP with TJ and Alex Noriega on a workshop. They teach not only the craft of photography, but also the art of photography. They introduced me to a new and deeper way of seeing the landscape and encouraged me to try to capture the mood/meaning and not just beautiful pixels. Their concern for the well-being of every member of the group was plainly evident every day. I wholeheartedly and without reservation recommend them as workshop leaders and photography mentors.”

I attended and thoroughly enjoyed a workshop in Yosemite in the fall of 2022, led by Alex Noriega and William Neill. Alex surprised me with his humble and graceful approach to teaching the workshop. William shared his vast knowledge about photographing in Yosemite, while letting the participants both set the pace and encouraging us to create our own photographic vision of the area. They were highly attentive to the individual needs of each participant, in the field as well as in post processing, and provided me with exactly with what I was looking for at this point in time. I’ll be on the lookout for other workshops in the future!”

Peo O. - Seattle, Washington

“They say to never meet your heroes, but I forewent that advice and joined one of Alex Noriega's photography workshops. I've been a huge fan of his photography and post processing tutorials for years, but had not yet learned from him in the field. In this case, meeting my hero was not disappointing at all - it was reaffirming!

Anybody can teach you the "where," "when," and "what" of nature photography by taking you to the same old viewpoints and pointing out "the shots." What puts Alex head and shoulders above the rest is how capable he is at teaching the "how" and the "why" of making impactful, unique, and creative photographs. I came away from his workshop with a pile of images I am really proud of, but even more valuable were his versatile teachings that I will be able to use in the future in any other situation. I appreciated how generous Alex was with his constructive critique and how he gave it in a way that was very clear and immediately actionable. He gave his students his full attention at all times, and only used his own camera for instructive purposes - he never went off on his own to make his own images.

Alex is a master of composition and emphasizing light in any conditions, which is really the secret sauce of nature photography. Additionally, he teaches his postprocessing techniques in a really straightforward way that emphasizes the artistic vision in the field. I was surprised at how simple it was to get great results with his methods. Much like in the field, he excels at teaching why he does what he does; he doesn't just give you a fish, he teaches you how to fish!

And perhaps most importantly, he was just a really fun and laid back guy to hang out with. Not only does that make for a great travel experience, but when you're relaxed and having a good time, you'll make better photos too!”

“The workshop with TJ & Alex Noriega was definitely one of the most enjoyable photography workshops I have taken. Both TJ & Alex are first and foremost very kind and very professional in their approach, they are all about the client when out in the field. They are very engaging and willing to help in any way. We had a great time with them, as they are very good friends they are pretty funny together and and make everyone feel very comfortable. I would highly recommend a workshop with both TJ & Alex, you will not be disappointed!”

“I participated in the Death Valley Workshop under TJ and Alex in January of 2022. This was my first workshop experience ever. I learned so much it’s hard to put it all in this review. One thing I really appreciated about TJ and Alex is their genuine attention to their students. They really take the time to get to know you and help you expand on your skills. Their relaxed approach helped me to feel relaxed and comfortable working in challenging situations. This workshop was by far my greatest experience in photography! I’ve already signed up for their next session.”

“I took the Death Valley workshop with TJ Thorne and Alex Noriega in February 2022, and was thrilled to bits with my experience. The workshop was well planned, the communication before and during was excellent and the locations chosen were inspiring. But more importantly, TJ and Alex were inspiring and creative teachers who encouraged us to see beyond “the classic shots” and delve into deeper waters. They both challenged me and supported me to see compositions within the landscape that I wouldn’t have known were there. They are artists of the finest degree, but also wonderful teachers and mates- their humor and camaraderie made the experience fun as well as deeply interesting. I couldn’t recommend them any higher!”

Alli N. - Portland, Oregon

“This was a fantastic workshop. TJ and Alex are not only great photographers and teachers, but they care about and take care of their workshop participants. They are humble, flexible, responsive, and caring. Despite dabbling in photography for more than a decade, I learned an entirely new way of viewing the world around me, was introduced to new styles and techniques, and made some good friends that I look forward to staying in touch with. I am already planning my next workshop with these two...”

Garth M. - Vancouver, Canada

"Alex and TJ are great photographers, very friendly people and great workshop leaders. The workshop was well organized and has been very useful to me. TJ and Alex were always available and provided personalized instructions throughout the workshop. I would recommend their workshop to anybody who wants to improve photography and explore an area like Death Valley and the Eastern Sierra."

Jean B. - Montreal, Canada

“I joined Alex and TJ for their Winter Death Valley workshop in 2019 and had a fantastic time. As well as enjoying a lot of laughs with the group I found the instructors to be 100% committed to finding great light. We stopped by the grand scenes that the region is known for but even more valuable to me was that they helped us to see beyond the apparent compositions to search for something unique. I came home with some iconic shots, abstracts, and intimate scenes and with inspiration to see the landscape differently. They helped us notice the subtle as well as the sublime. I recommend Alex and TJ's workshops for shooters of all experience levels. I am sure that you will learn from their point of view.”

Nathan K. - Sydney, Australia

"I can't thank you enough for providing an adventure of a lifetime. I have been on a few workshops over the past 4 years and I must say this was by far the most professionally run workshop. My experience during this past week far exceeded my expectations!! Your knowledge of photography and willingness to share your passion and love for the outdoors is second to none. The sights, sounds, hikes, conversations, your patience, attention to detail, sense of humor and willingness to teach myself and others have given me memories for life. Your command for PS post processing techniques were very impressive, informative and the added touch of providing us the video and audio will be an invaluable teaching tool. I am so happy that I can do my little part in helping you follow your dream."

Bob K. - Tucson, Arizona

“TJ and Alex are an amazing team, client centric focusing on how they can offer the best experience on a daily basis. This is not a tourist photography workshop, it's a photographers workshop. I highly recommend TJ's workshops to anybody wanting to grow their craft in a deep experiential way.”

Jean L. - Calgary, Canada

“TJ and Alex are very talented photographers and instructors. This workshop is the best I've taken in years. It brought together all the elements I have been seeking for years - allowing me to begin the journey of taking my photography to the next level. Highly recommended!”

Christian B. - Cincinnati, Ohio

“Excellent workshop! Alex and TJ are location experts as well as incredible photographers. Highly recommended. Will take a trip with them again!”

Roberto M. - Mexico City, Mexico

"Again, a very valuable morning spent. How to get an image to best represent my intent at capture or at post processing is a never-ending learning experience for me. The format of the Critique Groups works very well for this. The ideas Eric and Alex Noriega have on how to minimize the detractors and bring out the elements that clarify one's intent is key to what I’m working on at this point in my photography."

Craig M.

“If you want to learn from the very best in a truly world class photographic environment then look no further than Bill and Alex’s Yosemite Autumn or Spring Workshops.  Bill and Alex are great teachers and are committed to improving your photographic skills in the field and the classroom.  They spend quality time with students in the field on image identification and capture.  Everyday classroom sessions include processing and critiques.  The personal 1 on 1 at the conclusion of the session was especially valuable to me.”

Bob E. - Portland, Oregon

“I took the Death Valley workshop with TJ and Alex Noriega and it was an amazing experience. TJ distributed a 10 page guide before the workshop began with a ton of valuable details to prep. The workshop itself was informative, fun, and engaging. TJ and Alex know Death Valley exceptionally well, and took us to some wonderful spots. They were always available to answer questions, but also allowed us to drift off when preferred. The focus of the workshop was on making our photographs simpler and more creative, and those themes were reinforced throughout our time together. I would take another workshop from each of these guys (together or separately) without hesitation. Worth 5 days and every (moderately priced) penny.”

Steve V.

“TJ and Alex were amazing teachers - bringing us to spots that would help us see Death Valley through fresh eyes; encouraging us to push outside our comfort zone; and offering valuable guidance to expand our skills. I give my highest recommendation and will definitely try to attend another workshop soon!”
